The Florida Warm Line Is Here for You
Usually, when we search to connect with people who understand our unique challenges and journeys, we go straight to social media. But, you can always count on the Florida Warm Line to directly connect you to just that.
988 Hotline vs Florida Warm Line
The new 988 Hotline launched in 2020, is operated by the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and is a resource for people who are in or approaching an imminent crisis.
On the other hand, the Florida Warm Line is a resource for more preventative measures. It’s about connecting and speaking with someone who understands how to help you through a transitional period. You can call this phone line regularly. It is an uplifting service to refresh your mental health.
What is the Florida Warm Line?
The Florida Warm Line is a FREE resource open 365 days a year from 4 to 10 p.m. Perfectly timed to be available after traditional mental health resources are closed for the day. This phone line was launched in 2016 and is run by the Florida Department of Children and Families through a partnership with the Peer Support Coalition of Florida.
The goal of this phone line is to empower and uplift people to take their mental health into their own hands. And also, to support them in that journey with people who truly understand what they are going through. Operators help you identify the root issue needing attention, and will ensure you have all the care you need because everything you experience matters. The Florida Warm Line number is 1-800-945-1355.
Who is it for?
This phone line is for adults 18+ who are dealing with mental health issues. Family members that need support for a loved one can benefit from using the Florida Warm Line. One example includes tips on how to be the best supporter for your loved one in need.
If you are ever feeling lonely, without support, and need someone to talk to, (even if it’s just about your day or a funny joke you need to share) don’t hesitate to call.
Who are the operators?
The operators are non-clinical board-certified recovery peer specialists and nationally certified peer specialists who also battle with their own mental health issues. Operator, Jenny Lapham, elaborates:
“All of our operators have mental health diagnoses of our own and we can speak from a place of full disclosure, or disclosure based on our own comfort level to really connect with our adult callers. And be the difference when somebody says, ‘you don’t understand.’ Peer specialists can actually demonstrate that we do understand, we do understand the mental health system, with diagnoses, with medication assistance, with lack of resources in people’s area.”
This is what we mean about connecting with people who truly understand, just as you would on social media. But in this case, you are speaking directly to a reliable source who will answer your call 365 days a year. They have been through what you have been through, and are trained to support you in every way they can.
“The best part is just connecting with people who get it, with people who can celebrate your triumphs, who will also walk with you when it’s not so triumphant.”
Lapham in an interview with WGCU’s Sandra Viktorova
A call Lapham will never forget came from a woman that couldn’t get herself to take a shower. Jenny completely felt in her element and understood how she challenge. They spoke about what the shower represents, breaking down each task into more digestible bites. The caller got as far as turning the water on and went back to watching TV. Supporting the caller, and helping her achieve that first step with the shower, was a triumphant milestone. At that moment, Jenny realized that her help, and this phone line, were making a positive difference!
